TSA Flags Rise in Firearm Finds at Indiana Airports

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a warning on May 20 after multiple firearms were discovered at Indiana airports, raising concerns ahead of the busy summer travel season.
At Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA), TSA officers intercepted a firearm at a security checkpoint—the seventh such find at the airport this year. That total already matches the number of firearms detected at FWA in all of 2024.
“It’s troubling that TSA officers this year have already stopped the same number of firearms as they did in all of 2024, and the year isn’t even halfway over,” said Indiana TSA Federal Security Director Aaron Batt. “As we look ahead to our summer travel season, we strongly encourage passengers to pack smart and start with an empty bag. Bringing a firearm to the checkpoint is a careless, expensive mistake that increases risks to passengers and airport employees.”
Further incidents were reported at Indianapolis International Airport (IND), where TSA officers discovered four firearms in separate incidents over five days. The total number of firearms intercepted at IND this year now stands at 18.
“While we’re pleased that overall this year, passengers are bringing fewer firearms to IND checkpoints, these recent incidents are troubling,” Batt added in a second statement.
The TSA continues to remind travelers that firearms must be properly packed and declared in checked baggage. Attempting to bring them through security can result in fines, criminal charges, and delays. With summer travel approaching, the agency urges all passengers to follow safety protocols carefully.
