TSA’s Self-Service Security Screening Revolution Begins at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is ushering in a new era of airport security with the introduction of self-service security screening technology, set to debut at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. This innovative approach, scheduled to start in January 2024, is part of TSA’s “Screening at Speed” program, aimed at increasing screening efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience, while maintaining a stable number of Transportation Security Officers (TSOs).

The self-service screening system, likened to self-ordering kiosks in restaurants, will allow passengers, especially those enrolled in the Trusted Traveler Program, to complete the security screening process independently. This technology is designed to reduce the number of pat-downs and bag inspections, thereby freeing TSOs to focus on busier aspects of screening operations. Passengers will utilize individual consoles or screening lanes to screen themselves and their carry-on items, which is expected to minimize person-to-person contact and allow passengers to proceed at their own pace.

The new screening system will first be available to TSA PreCheck travelers. It involves several technologies, including pod-based designs for passengers to use individual screening consoles, in-motion panel sensors for near-real-time screening, and integrated stations for a complete self-service experience.

The implementation of this self-service screening technology represents a significant step towards transforming airport security operations. It promises to streamline the screening process, offering a more efficient and potentially more comfortable experience for travelers.
