Turkey’s AJet Seeks 36 Aircraft to Offset Boeing Delivery Delays

AJet, the Turkish low-cost carrier based in Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen, is negotiating with lessors to acquire additional aircraft in 2025 to maintain its aggressive growth plans amid delays in Boeing deliveries, according to CEO Kerem Sarp. The carrier is primarily focusing on leasing or purchasing Airbus aircraft to fill the gap caused by the delays.

AJet had initially planned to take delivery of thirty-six Boeing 737 MAX jets in 2025, but Sarp acknowledged that not all of them would likely enter service as scheduled. As the airline aims to expand its fleet to 200 narrowbody aircraft by 2033, it is seeking alternative sources for aircraft to sustain its expansion trajectory.

Currently, AJet operates only eight Boeing 737-800s under its own Air Operator’s Certificate, though its total fleet consists of 109 aircraft. This includes various Boeing 737s and Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft operated by Turkish Airlines, SunExpress, and SmartLynx Airlines, with more aircraft set to transfer to AJet in the future.

Although AJet does not have direct orders from Boeing, Turkish Airlines, its parent company, has a significant commitment for 191 A321-200NX aircraft, some of which will be delivered to AJet. The airline continues discussions with Boeing for a future order of Boeing 737 MAX jets while supplementing its fleet with leased aircraft in the meantime.
