A Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Taipei experienced severe turbulence just before landing at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) on September 5, 2024. Despite the incident, the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft landed safely, though four passengers and two crew members sustained injuries, according to local media reports.

Flight TK24, operated by Boeing 777-300ER registered TC-JJE, was en route from Istanbul-Ataturk Airport (IST) to Taipei when it encountered unexpected turbulence. The flight was cruising at 31,000 feet (10,100 meters) over Chinese airspace, approximately two hours from its destination, when the turbulence struck.

The Aviation Herald reported that the turbulence was sudden and intense, catching the crew off guard. As a result, six individuals—comprising both passengers and crew who were not seated at the time—sustained injuries. The flight continued to its destination and landed on runway 05L without further complications.

Upon arrival, emergency services were stationed at the airport to assist the injured. Passengers who were unable to proceed with their travels were provided with accommodations and alternative arrangements by the airline. While the injuries were described as minor, two of the injured were taken to the hospital for precautionary medical evaluations.

A statement from Turkish Airlines read, “Our passengers and crew on flight TK24 from Istanbul to Taipei experienced a period of unexpected turbulence. Unfortunately, a small number of passengers and crew members sustained minor injuries. We are relieved that the aircraft landed safely and that medical assistance was provided promptly.”

The airline extended its apologies for the distressing experience and inconvenience caused, emphasizing its commitment to passenger safety and comfort. Turkish Airlines also stated it would cooperate with Taiwanese authorities to investigate the turbulence’s cause and review if any warnings had been missed.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Taipei for approximately four hours before resuming its return flight to Istanbul.
