Turkish Airlines Streamlines Fleet: Transfers 737-800s to Propel AJet’s Standalone Launch

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the certification and launch of its wholly-owned subsidiary, AJet (formerly AnadoluJet), Turkish Airlines has announced the transfer of five B737-800 aircraft. The move is part of AJet’s transformation into a standalone airline, with plans set for a solo takeoff in March 2024.

While Turkish Airlines has not disclosed the specific identity of the transferred aircraft, the decision underscores the carrier’s commitment to facilitating AJet’s transition into an independent entity. Turkish Airlines currently operates a robust fleet of eighty-six B737-800s, with 46 dedicated to AnadoluJet’s network. The carrier owns the majority of this subfleet and dry-leases 28 aircraft, including 12 units assigned to AnadoluJet.

AnadoluJet, which currently operates under Turkish Airlines’ ‘TK’ code, will see a significant transformation with this strategic move. The B737-800s, differing not only in livery but also in configuration from the mainline fleet, will play a crucial role in AJet’s operational setup. Turkish Airlines’ B737-800s can accommodate up to 151 passengers, including 16 in a dedicated business class, while AnadoluJet’s single-class layout caters to up to 186 or 189 passengers.

The transferred aircraft add to AnadoluJet’s existing fleet, which includes forty-six B737-800s, nine A320-200Ns, fourteen A321-200NX, and seven B737-8s. As AJet gears up for its standalone launch, the strategic fleet transfer positions the subsidiary for success in the competitive aviation landscape.

Stay tuned for updates as AJet takes flight as an independent airline, marking a new chapter in Turkish aviation.
