Turkish Low-Cost Carrier AJet Takes Flight with New AOC and Rebranding
In a major development for Turkey’s aviation landscape, AnadoluJet has rebranded itself as AJet and obtained its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) on January 2, 2024. This pivotal achievement sets the stage for AJet to operate as an independent carrier, separate from its previous status as a division of Turkish Airlines, with plans to commence operations before the Summer 2024 season.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu confirmed the completion of the certification process in just over four months, following the application lodged in late August 2023. The swift approval underscores AJet’s readiness to step into the competitive aviation market as a standalone low-cost carrier.
AJet’s strategic focus remains on short- and medium-haul routes, catering to the demand for visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and leisure travel. Turkish Airlines has demonstrated its commitment to the success of AJet by transferring ownership of five Boeing 737-800s to the newly rebranded carrier, reinforcing its capitalization.
As indicated by ch-aviation’s fleets advanced module, AJet’s current fleet, operating under the Turkish Airlines ‘TK’ code, includes nine A320-200Ns, fourteen A321-200NXs, seven B737-8s, and forty-five B737-800s. Additionally, AJet engages in wet-leasing agreements with SmartLynx Airlines and SmartLynx Airlines Malta for additional A320-200s, A321-200s, and B737-8s. Turkish Airlines envisions AJet as a crucial growth platform, with plans to expand the fleet to 200 aircraft. Chairman Ahmed Bolat emphasized that AJet will benefit from Turkish Airlines’ recent order for 150 A321neo aircraft, with an option for an additional 100, aligning with the group’s commitment to transitioning to new-generation narrowbodies.
In parallel news, Turkish Airlines disclosed its intention to launch long-awaited direct flights to Australia, specifically to Melbourne Tullamarine. While specific dates for the route launch are yet to be announced, this move signifies Turkish Airlines’ continuous expansion into key international markets.
