U.S. Issues Travel Advisory for Switzerland Amid Safety Concerns

The U.S. Department of State has issued a new travel advisory for Switzerland, assigning it a Level 1 designation, which means travelers are advised to “exercise normal precautions.” Despite the low alert level, the advisory includes important safety guidance for Americans planning visits, especially with the busy summer travel season approaching.

The advisory encourages U.S. citizens to enroll in alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Bern and review the country security report for Switzerland. While Switzerland remains one of the safest destinations globally, travelers are warned to remain cautious, particularly in major cities like Geneva, where petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are more common.

According to the State Department, pickpockets often operate in teams—one distracts the target while the other steals valuables. Transport hubs and tourist areas are hotspots for these crimes. Travelers are advised to maintain good situational awareness and keep personal belongings secure at all times.

While kidnapping is not listed as a threat, the advisory notes varying terrorism risk levels across the country. Bern is rated low for terrorism and political violence, whereas Geneva holds a medium threat rating. The department warns that lone actors inspired by extremist ideologies remain a potential risk, with Switzerland historically seen as a logistical base for terrorist activities, even though it has largely avoided major attacks.

The State Department urges travelers to remain alert and informed while abroad, though it does not advise canceling trips to Switzerland. The Level 1 advisory remains the lowest on its four-tier warning system.
