Uber and WeRide Launch Autonomous Robotaxi Service in Riyadh

Uber and autonomous driving technology company WeRide have launched robotaxi passenger services in Riyadh, with rides now bookable directly through the Uber app. The pilot marks a major step in Saudi Arabia’s push toward smart mobility and autonomous transportation.
During the initial rollout, safety operators will ride in the autonomous vehicles to ensure smooth operations and assist passengers. Over time, the robotaxis are expected to transition to fully driverless service. The first phase covers select routes between Roshn Front and Princess Noura University, offering controlled, high-visibility deployment in one of the capital’s key activity corridors.
“We’re proud to partner with Uber to introduce autonomous mobility in Riyadh, marking another global milestone for WeRide and for the kingdom’s journey toward smart and sustainable transport,” said Jennifer Li, CFO and head of international at WeRide. She said the goal is to support safer, greener and more efficient urban mobility.
Saudi Arabia began formal testing of AVs earlier this year, following the Transport General Authority’s launch of the autonomous vehicle operational phase. WeRide previously became the first company to receive a robotaxi permit in Saudi Arabia and also holds permits in China, the UAE, Singapore, France, Belgium and the U.S.
Uber and WeRide first partnered in 2024 to introduce AV rides in the UAE. In May 2025, the companies announced plans to expand robotaxi availability to 15 additional cities over the next five years across multiple regions outside the U.S. and China.
