Uber Invests $300M in Nuro to Launch Lucid-Powered Robotaxis

Uber is making a bold move into the autonomous vehicle market with a new partnership involving robotics company Nuro and electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid. As part of the deal, Uber will invest approximately $300 million into Nuro to deploy more than 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs outfitted with Nuro’s autonomous driving system.

The first prototype of the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is already being tested at Nuro’s private facility in Las Vegas. The autonomous vehicle program is set to debut in a major U.S. city by late 2026, with plans to expand globally over the next six years. Uber or its third-party fleet operators will own and manage the vehicles, which riders can schedule through the Uber app.

Powered by Nuro’s AI-driven “Nuro Driver” system and Lucid’s long-range electric platform—boasting a 450-mile EPA-estimated range—the robotaxis are designed to be cost-efficient and require minimal downtime. Uber says the high-capacity EVs will help reduce operating costs while boosting vehicle availability.

“Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “We’re thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid to bring this robotaxi vision to life.”

The partnership is part of Uber’s broader push into the autonomous vehicle space. This week alone, Uber announced partnerships with Baidu to deploy Apollo Go AVs outside the U.S. and China, Pony.ai for U.S. operations, and an expanded deal with WeRide. In May, Uber also unveiled a multi-year collaboration with May Mobility to integrate thousands of AVs into its U.S. platform.
