Uganda Airlines to Acquire Two Boeing Freighters
The Ugandan cabinet has approved the acquisition of two Boeing freighters for Uganda Airlines. The purchase includes a narrowbody Boeing 737-800BCF and a widebody Boeing 777-F, as announced by Richard Ndiku, commissioner at the Ministry of Works and Transport. Negotiations with Boeing on terms and conditions are currently underway.
Ndiku shared the update during a parliamentary session on November 29, discussing progress on the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) 2021-2026 manifesto. The plan emphasizes boosting agricultural exports by equipping Uganda Airlines with cargo aircraft.
This announcement follows President Yoweri Museveni’s approval in September for six additional aircraft for the state-owned carrier, including four A320-200neo narrowbodies and two Boeing 787 widebodies, likely 787-8s. Although Uganda Airlines had earlier stated plans for Boeing freighters were shelved, the strategy appears to have been revised. The A320neo deliveries are expected post-2030, with interim dry leases planned until then.
Currently, Uganda Airlines operates a fleet of two A330-800neo and four CRJ900LRs, according to the ch-aviation fleets module. These new acquisitions signal a strategic expansion aimed at enhancing Uganda’s cargo and passenger transport capabilities.
