UK Air Taxi Revolution: Joby & Virgin Partner

In a groundbreaking move set to reshape urban travel in the United Kingdom, Joby Aviation has announced a strategic partnership with Virgin Atlantic to launch zero-emission air taxi services. Unveiled on March 15, 2025, the partnership marks a major step toward bringing high-speed, all-electric air travel to the UK market. The new service will initially connect key Virgin Atlantic hubs, including London Heathrow (LHR) and Manchester Airport (MAN), with major regional cities, offering passengers a fast, eco-friendly alternative to conventional ground transport.
Joby Aviation, a United States venture-backed company renowned for its innovative approach to urban air mobility, is developing an all-electric air taxi that can cruise at speeds of up to 200 mph. The aircraft, equipped with six tilting propellers for quiet takeoffs and landings, is designed for busy metropolitan areas where noise and efficiency are paramount. Each air taxi will accommodate one pilot and up to four passengers for journeys of up to 100 miles. For example, a flight from Manchester Airport to Leeds could take just 15 minutes, while a trip from Heathrow to Canary Wharf might last only 8 minutes. These rapid connections have the potential to significantly reduce travel times and urban congestion.
Virgin Atlantic will play a key role in this innovative venture by leveraging its extensive network and trusted brand to build passenger confidence and assist in regulatory approvals. Passengers flying with Virgin Atlantic—and even Delta Air Lines on select routes—will soon have the option to book Joby air taxi flights directly through Virgin Atlantic’s booking platform. This seamless integration of services is expected to make air taxis an attractive option for both business and leisure travelers seeking a premium, time-saving travel experience.
CEO Shai Weiss of Virgin Atlantic expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “With innovation firmly in our DNA, we are delighted to partner with Joby to bring zero-emission, short-haul flights to airports and cities throughout the UK. Together, we will deliver faster, more convenient connections and enhance the travel experience for our customers.” The new service is set to offer pricing comparable to premium ridesharing options, making air taxis an accessible and practical alternative for urban travel.
Joby showcased its electric air taxi at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, and has completed thousands of test flights in markets like New York, Japan, and Korea. With proven technology and operational advantages, Joby is ready to launch its services in the UK. Working closely with the UK Civil Aviation Authority, both partners are ensuring that safety and regulatory standards are met. This collaboration heralds a new era in urban mobility and paves the way for sustainable travel options across the UK.
Industry experts and passengers are optimistic that this innovative service will ease congestion and reduce emissions, setting a new benchmark for urban mobility and sustainable travel.
