UK’s Loganair Bids Farewell to Saab 340 Operations
Loganair, headquartered at Glasgow International Airport, marked the end of an era as it retired its last Saab 340B aircraft on January 25, 2024. The airline commemorated the occasion with a special farewell flight, taking off from Kirkwall and making its way to Glasgow International via Inverness.
These venerable Saab 340s have played a pivotal role in Loganair’s operations over the years, facilitating vital connections between remote communities and the mainland. These workhorses have not only carried over 8 million passengers but have also transported essential cargo, including food, newspapers, pets, and mail. Jonathan Hinkles, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of Loganair, expressed his personal nostalgia for these aircraft, saying, “As someone whose aviation journey was prompted by a strong passion for flying, I am personally very sad to see these aircraft go.”
However, Loganair is not bidding adieu to turboprop operations altogether. Instead, the airline is ushering in a new era of regional travel by introducing its brand-new fleet of ATR (Avions de Transport Régional) aircraft. These modern aircraft are set to provide passengers with enhanced space and comfort. The transition represents Loganair’s commitment to providing top-notch service to its customers.
The retirement of G-LGNA was not the only milestone of the day, as its sister aircraft, G-LGNJ, also took its final bow and was retired on the same day.
As Loganair continues to evolve its fleet, the airline is steadily replacing its Saab turboprops with ATR models. Currently, Loganair operates five ATR42-500s, two ATR42-600s, four ATR72-500(F)s, and six ATR72-600s. According to the ch-aviation fleets module, the airline has plans to lease at least three more ATR72-600s, underscoring its dedication to expanding and modernizing its regional aircraft fleet.
The retirement of the Saab 340s marks a significant milestone in Loganair’s history, but the airline looks forward to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead with its new ATR fleet. The increased space and comfort offered by the ATR aircraft promise to enhance the travel experience for Loganair’s loyal customers, reaffirming the airline’s commitment to serving remote communities and maintaining vital connections throughout the UK.
