United Airline Ends Bus Routes as Landline Shifts Strategy

United Airlines will discontinue two regional routes operated by luxury motorcoach company Landline, ending a partnership that began in 2021. The airline-integrated bus services between Fort Collins, Colorado, and Denver International Airport (DEN), and between Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), will be phased out by July 31 and September 1, respectively.
The decision reflects Landline’s pivot toward other commercial ventures. “We did make the decision to discontinue our partnership with United to focus on other commercial opportunities,” said Nick Johnson, Landline’s vice president. United confirmed the change, stating it is reaching out to affected customers with rebooking or refund options.
Unlike traditional buses, Landline’s vehicles offer a first-class travel experience, with 35 airline-style seats, tray tables, WiFi, and a spacious 36-40 inch seat pitch in a two-by-one configuration. The company operates under capacity-purchase agreements with airlines, allowing passengers to book seamless itineraries that include both the bus and the connecting flight.
Landline will continue to run buses independently between Fort Collins and Denver, expanding service to 17 daily trips. However, these routes will no longer be tied to airline tickets, meaning passengers must now book the ground and air segments separately.
Landline still maintains strong ties with other carriers. It operates American Airlines-branded services from five cities—including Allentown, Atlantic City, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Wilmington, and soon Trenton—to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). These secure-to-secure services let passengers clear security at the regional airport and avoid re-screening at the hub, with bags automatically transferred to their flights.
Additionally, Landline runs landside-to-landside service for Air Canada from Waterloo and Hamilton to Toronto Pearson, and for Sun Country Airlines from Duluth to Minneapolis. The company is also working to expand secure-to-secure access in Canada and is in talks to launch more U.S. and Canadian routes.
