United Airlines’ $2.6 Billion Expansion of Terminal B at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport
As part of its ambitious United Next growth plan, United Airlines, in partnership with the Houston Airport System, has embarked on a transformative $2.6 billion project to revamp and expand Terminal B at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This investment not only signifies a major upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure but also signals a boon for the local economy with the creation of thousands of new jobs.
The project involves a complete overhaul of the Terminal B North Concourse, replacing the existing structure that dates back to 1969. The new three-level concourse will span approximately 765,000 square feet and will feature 22 gates for narrow-body aircraft. In addition to this, the Terminal B South Concourse will undergo significant changes, including the conversion of 30 gates currently serving small regional jets to 18 gates designed for larger, two-class regional jets. All these gates will be equipped with jet bridges, replacing the current ground boarding ramps.
Another highlight of the project is the construction of a large United Club at the mezzanine level, which is poised to become the largest in the United network. The expansion will also include state-of-the-art food and retail spaces across two major concessions hubs, a sensory room, and comfort zones for passengers with disabilities.
This extensive redevelopment will not only increase the terminal’s capacity to handle more travelers on peak travel dates by 40 percent but also elevate the passenger experience with modern amenities and efficient services. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026, marking a significant milestone in United Airlines’ efforts to enhance its presence and services in Houston.
