United Airlines Expands Asia-Pacific Network with New 787-9 Routes
United Airlines is set to further expand its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region with the introduction of two new fifth-freedom routes from Hong Kong International Airport, and the launch of its first nonstop service between the United States and Adelaide, Australia. Beginning October 26, United will operate daily flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport. These new routes, designed to cater to a mix of local and international travelers, will be flown using Boeing 787-9 aircraft that are already serving routes from Los Angeles International and San Francisco International to Hong Kong.
This strategic expansion is part of United’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region, a market where the carrier is working to differentiate itself from other U.S. airlines by embracing innovative routing options. The introduction of fifth-freedom routes from Hong Kong follows earlier developments with Tokyo Narita, where United introduced new routes to Kaohsiung in Taiwan, Koror in Palau, and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia for the 2025 northern hemisphere summer. “From United’s perspective, it’s about using all the tools available to us to find customers,” said Stephen Morrissey, Vice President of International Regulatory Affairs and Policy, during the Japan International Transport and Tourism Institute Civil Aviation Symposium in Washington, D.C. “We’re trying to drive the future, not wait for it to develop. We want to find people where they are and get them where they want to go.”
In another exciting development, United will launch its first nonstop service between San Francisco International and Adelaide Airport on December 11. This route, the only nonstop service connecting the U.S. to Adelaide, will operate three times weekly using the Boeing 787-9. The 787-9 aircraft, configured to carry 257 passengers with 48 seats in business class, underscores United’s commitment to providing premium comfort and efficiency on long-haul routes. With the addition of these new services, United will expand its Asia-Pacific route network to a total of 32, further solidifying its position as a leading carrier in this dynamic region.
To complement these new services, United is also increasing the frequency on its popular San Francisco-Manila route. Starting October 25, flights on this route will double from once daily to twice daily, with the increased capacity being served by Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This move is designed to meet growing demand and ensure that travelers enjoy more flexible and convenient options when flying between these key cities.
United’s latest expansions are a testament to its commitment to enhancing network connectivity and embracing innovative route structures that meet the needs of today’s diverse traveler base.
