United Airlines Gains Five Gates at Chicago O’Hare Airport

United Airlines has secured five additional gates at Chicago O’Hare International Airport following a Cook County court ruling that enforced the “use it or lose it” clause in the airport’s lease agreement with the City of Chicago. The decision also resulted in American Airlines losing control of four gates, reshaping gate allocation between the airport’s two largest carriers.

The court’s ruling supports O’Hare’s strategy to ensure optimal gate utilization and enhance competition among airlines operating at one of the world’s busiest airports. The reallocation was determined based on each carrier’s flight frequency and operational activity, with United emerging as the primary beneficiary due to its higher gate usage and expansion plans.

With the new gates, United plans to boost flight frequencies and expand connectivity from its Chicago hub, which already serves as one of the airline’s key domestic and international gateways. The carrier said the additional space will help it streamline operations, improve on-time performance, and accommodate future route growth.

American Airlines, however, has voiced opposition to the decision and indicated plans to continue pursuing legal options to challenge the gate transfer. The airline maintains that the ruling unfairly penalizes carriers during periods of fluctuating demand and undermines their long-term investments at the airport.

The “use it or lose it” policy, long debated within the aviation industry, is designed to encourage efficient use of limited airport infrastructure. For O’Hare, the enforcement of this rule marks a significant step toward balancing access, improving scheduling flexibility, and ensuring that high-demand gates are fully utilized to benefit passengers and the broader Chicago travel market.
