United Airlines’ Innovative Calibrate Program: Paving the Way for Future Aviation Technicians

United Airlines is revolutionizing the recruitment of aviation maintenance professionals through its innovative Calibrate program. This full-time, paid apprenticeship provides an invaluable opportunity for individuals to embark on a career as a United technician. The program is unique in offering participants the chance to earn while they learn, receiving technician pay, benefits, and travel perks from day one. This approach not only equips apprentices with hands-on experience with cutting-edge aircraft and airport equipment but also saves them up to $50,000 in tuition and related expenses.

Launched in November 2022, Calibrate aims to train over 1,000 people by 2026, with a specific focus on increasing diversity within the workforce. The program strives for at least half of its participants to be women or people of color, addressing the current underrepresentation in the field. As of now, only 2.6% of certificated aircraft technicians are female, and only 40% are people of color.

The 36-month program covers various aspects of technical training, including ground service equipment and facilities maintenance. Participants not only gain valuable skills and knowledge but also build relationships and acquire union seniority. United plans to accept external applications for Calibrate starting in early 2023.

In addition to Calibrate, United Airlines has also partnered with the National Aviation Academy (NAA) to offer a direct pipeline to aviation maintenance careers. This partnership ensures that students maintain high academic standards and provides them with priority screening and mentorship opportunities within United’s extensive network.

These initiatives are part of United’s broader commitment to workforce development and diversification, in line with their United Next growth plans. The airline is set to hire over 50,000 people by 2026, including 7,000 maintenance technicians. United’s efforts not only address the growing demand for skilled aviation professionals but also reflect their dedication to creating inclusive and sustainable career pathways.
