United Airlines May Remove Passengers Who Refuse Headphones

United Airlines has introduced a stricter rule aimed at reducing noise in aircraft cabins, requiring passengers to use headphones when listening to audio or video on personal electronic devices. The airline updated its contract of carriage to make the policy explicit and warned that travelers who refuse to comply could be removed from flights.
The revised rules state that any passenger watching videos, listening to music, or playing audio from a phone, tablet, or laptop must wear headphones. Travelers who allow sound to play openly from their devices risk enforcement action from the airline, including removal from the aircraft.
United quietly updated the policy in its contract of carriage, the legal document outlining the airline’s rules and passenger responsibilities. Under the new language, the airline reserves the right to deny transportation to passengers who refuse to use headphones when consuming audio or video content during a flight.
In more serious cases, the airline may also refuse transport to repeat offenders in the future. According to the updated policy, passengers who repeatedly fail to follow the rule could face a permanent ban from flying with the carrier.
The move reflects growing efforts by airlines to maintain a quiet and comfortable cabin environment as passengers increasingly rely on smartphones, tablets and laptops for entertainment during flights. With streaming services, social media and gaming apps widely used onboard, the potential for unwanted noise in confined cabin spaces has become a growing concern.
Travel expert Scott Keyes said the policy appears to be unique among major U.S. airlines. While most carriers encourage passengers to use headphones when playing audio, they typically do not include explicit penalties such as removal from the aircraft for failing to comply.
Keyes noted that the rule aligns with the expectations of most travelers who prefer a quieter cabin during flights. In many cases, only a small number of passengers create disturbances by playing audio without headphones, which can disrupt the experience for others seated nearby.
United’s policy aims to address those situations by giving flight crews clearer authority to enforce quiet-cabin etiquette. Cabin crew members already manage a wide range of passenger issues during flights, and the airline said the headphone requirement will help ensure a more comfortable environment for everyone onboard.
To help travelers comply with the rule, United said it may provide complimentary earbuds to passengers who forget to bring their own, depending on availability. The airline advises passengers to carry their own headphones when traveling to avoid potential disruptions and ensure they can enjoy onboard entertainment without disturbing others.
The policy underscores a broader trend among airlines seeking to improve passenger comfort as cabins become increasingly connected and digital entertainment becomes a standard part of the travel experience.
