United Airlines Planes Collide While Taxiing at LaGuardia Airport

A United Airlines flight clipped another United Airlines aircraft while taxiing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Friday evening, according to a statement from the airline.

Flight 580, a Boeing 737 arriving from Chicago O’Hare International Airport with 166 passengers and eight crew members, was taxiing toward its gate when it struck the tail of United Flight 434, another Boeing 737 that was stationary and preparing to depart for Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport with 162 passengers and seven crew members on board.

“On Friday evening, United Flight 580 was turning into its arrival gate when it made contact with the tail of United Flight 434, which was stationary on the taxiway,” a United spokesperson said in a statement.

Both aircraft returned to the gate and all 328 passengers were able to deplane safely with no reported injuries. United noted it worked to rebook and reroute affected passengers “as quickly as possible.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it will investigate the incident. While air traffic controllers manage movement on runways and taxiways, the FAA clarified that gate-area movements fall under airline responsibility, stating, “FAA air traffic control is not responsible for plane movements in the gate area.”

The incident occurred during a period of wider airport disruptions across the U.S., partly due to air traffic controller staffing shortages and the ongoing government shutdown, which have contributed to delays nationwide.
