United Airlines to Offer Free Wi-Fi with SpaceX’s Starlink

United Airlines has announced a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX to provide free inflight Wi-Fi using Starlink’s satellite technology, marking the largest inflight internet deal to date for the satellite service. Starting early next year, United will begin equipping its fleet of over 1,000 aircraft with Starlink, offering passengers seamless “gate-to-gate” connectivity.

This move is part of a broader trend among airlines to invest in faster inflight internet as they strive to attract premium customers, particularly business travelers. In the US, Delta Air Lines recently introduced free Wi-Fi for its SkyMiles loyalty program members, while Hawaiian Airlines also offers complimentary internet through its Starlink deal. JetBlue Airways has been providing free Wi-Fi for years as part of its standard service. JSX, a semi-private jet company, was the first to integrate Starlink into its service.

Internationally, a growing trend among airlines offering free in-flight Wi-Fi like airBaltic, Zipair, Qatar Airways, and Air New Zealand also offer Starlink Wi-Fi, though typically at an additional cost.

Currently, United Airlines relies on a mix of inflight internet providers, including ViaSat and Panasonic. The airline charges $8 for loyalty program members and $10 for others on domestic and short-haul international flights. The switch to Starlink will phase out these existing services, promising a more consistent and expansive coverage area. United’s new system will provide connectivity in areas previously underserved by traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals, including oceans, polar regions, and remote locations—a notable advantage for the airline given its extensive transatlantic and transpacific routes.

SpaceX’s Starlink, which has been operational since 2020, has significantly grown its network. With approximately 6,000 satellites currently in orbit, Starlink serves over 3 million customers across 100 countries. Initially focused on consumer markets, SpaceX has broadened its offerings to include aviation, making this partnership with United a key milestone in its expansion into the airline industry.

United Airlines is set to start testing Starlink’s inflight Wi-Fi on its aircraft early next year, with full deployment expected over the next several years. This enhancement reflects the airline’s commitment to improving passenger experience and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving inflight connectivity landscape.
