United Flight Attendant Resigns After Reportedly Getting Drunk on Duty

A longtime United Airlines flight attendant has resigned after becoming heavily intoxicated while working an international flight, according to multiple reports. The crew member, identified by The Sun as 56-year-old Margit Lake, was assigned to an overnight flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow on October 17 when she allegedly consumed “multiple” miniature liquor bottles she had brought on board.
Colleagues became so alarmed by her condition that they alerted medical crews ahead of landing. Paramedics met the aircraft at Heathrow and immediately detected the smell of alcohol, later confirming Lake had a blood-alcohol content of 216 milligrams — nearly 11 times the legal limit of 20 milligrams for operating on an aircraft.
Lake, who had served more than two decades with United, resigned shortly after the incident. In a court appearance last week, she pleaded guilty to performing an aviation function while over the legal alcohol limit, an offense that could have resulted in up to two years in prison.
Instead, the court imposed financial penalties, including a £1,461 fine, a £584 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs — totaling just over $2,800.
Lake’s attorney, Ben Lansbury, said his client consumed alcohol because she “needed to calm down,” adding that she was shocked by the outcome and “deeply regrets what happened.”
