A United Airlines flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles was diverted back to Hawaii on Tuesday after a potential security threat was discovered in the aircraft’s bathroom, the airline confirmed.

Flight 1169, operated by a Boeing 777, departed Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at approximately 9:40 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time. According to FlightAware tracking data, the aircraft reversed course about 90 minutes into the journey and returned to Honolulu.

The plane, carrying around 339 passengers and 10 crew members, was met by law enforcement upon landing. A United Airlines spokesperson said authorities conducted a thorough search of the aircraft but did not confirm if anything hazardous was found.

Passengers were held on the tarmac for approximately four hours as officers and canine units screened every individual and their belongings.

Kouhei Massey, a passenger onboard, told Hawaii News Now that a bomb threat was allegedly written on a bathroom mirror, prompting the emergency response. “I later found out from airport security that the message claimed there was a bomb on the plane,” Massey said.

The Federal Aviation Administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.

United Airlines said it is working to accommodate all passengers, with rebooking underway for a later flight to Los Angeles. The airline emphasized that customer safety remains its highest priority.

The incident adds to growing concerns over in-flight security threats and reinforces the importance of swift responses and coordinated efforts between airlines and airport security teams.
