United Launches First US-Mongolia Flight
United Airlines has become the first U.S. carrier to offer scheduled service to Mongolia, with its inaugural flight touching down at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar on May 1, 2025. Flight UA 7 departed George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston at 10:11 p.m. local time on April 30, operating on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. After a nonstop 14-hour journey, the aircraft arrived at Tokyo Narita Airport at 2:35 p.m. on May 1. Passengers then transferred to a United Boeing 737-800 for the six-hour leg to Ulaanbaatar, arriving at 9:16 p.m. local time.
The new Mongolia service is one of eight destinations United has added to its 2025 summer schedule, expanding the airline’s reach into less-served markets. Other new routes include nonstop flights from the United States to Nuuk in Greenland, Palau International Airport, and Dakar’s Blaise Diagne International Airport in Senegal. By linking Houston with Ulaanbaatar, United is responding to growing demand for direct connections to Central Asia, catering to both leisure travelers intrigued by Mongolia’s vast steppes and business passengers with interests in mining, infrastructure, and technology partnerships.
Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, said the carrier aims to provide “nonstop access to as many unique international destinations and experiences from the U.S. as possible.” Quayle first announced Mongolia service in October 2024, noting that such routes help United differentiate its route network and offer passengers convenient connections without lengthy layovers. The choice of Houston as the U.S. gateway reflects the city’s status as a major international business hub and its established demand for Central Asian travel.
United’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner played a crucial role in launching the long-haul segment to Tokyo, thanks to its fuel efficiency and passenger-comfort features such as improved cabin air pressure, larger windows, and quieter engines.
