Uniteds New Nonstop Flight Opens Madeira to U.S. Travelers
Flying into Madeira offers a breathtaking aerial view of jagged cliffs, lush mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean hugging the island’s dramatic coastline. This Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco has long attracted European travelers, but Americans are now discovering its charm in greater numbers. Since 2019, U.S. visitation to Madeira has doubled, and with new direct flights, the island is poised to become one of the next big travel destinations.
On June 8, 2025, United Airlines launched the first-ever nonstop service between the U.S. and Madeira, connecting Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC). The seasonal route, operating through September 24, runs three times a week on a Boeing 737 MAX 8. This addition builds on United’s existing routes to Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and the Azores.
The flight shaves off hours previously spent connecting through Lisbon or London, making Madeira more accessible for American travelers. Although the aircraft doesn’t offer lie-flat seats or United’s Polaris business-class service, the airline sees this narrow-body MAX 8 as a cost-effective way to test demand. It features 166 seats, including 16 Premium Plus recliners and a mix of extra-legroom and standard economy seats.
Madeira, often called the “island of eternal spring,” is celebrated for its warm Gulf Stream climate, volcanic landscapes, and unique blend of culture and nature. The capital city, Funchal, offers botanical gardens, historic toboggan rides, and lively markets. But the island’s appeal extends far beyond the city. A short drive leads to Seixal’s black-sand beaches, the lava rock pools of Porto Moniz, and scenic hiking along coastal cliffs and ancient levada irrigation channels.
Lodging options range from classic to contemporary. Reid’s Palace, a historic Belmond hotel favored by Winston Churchill, offers old-world elegance. The Savoy Palace, a newer luxury property, includes the exclusive Reserve with private lounges and rooftop pools. For diving enthusiasts, the Pestana Carlton Madeira provides direct access to the island’s underwater wonders as a dedicated PADI resort.
With its compact size—just 35 miles long and 14 miles wide—Madeira is easily navigable by car and ideal for exploration.
