US Authorities Investigate Delta Airlines After Boeing 757 Flight Delayed on Tarmac in Extreme Heat
US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg initiates an investigation into a recent Delta Air Ways flight delay amid scorching temperatures. Delta Flight 555, scheduled to depart from Las Vegas Harry Reid Airport (LAS) to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) on Monday, July 17, 2023, reportedly experienced a four-hour tarmac delay, subjecting passengers to extreme 111F (44C) heat without air conditioning.
The distressing situation led to several passengers requiring medical attention. A Fox News producer aboard the Boeing 757 reported the lack of air conditioning during the prolonged wait. Eventually, the flight was canceled, and passengers were allowed to disembark.
It’s essential to note that passengers on domestic US flights have the right to deplane after a three-hour tarmac delay. Secretary Buttigieg expressed concern about the passengers’ wellbeing and questioned how they were left onboard for such an extended period in triple-digit heat. He emphasized that tarmac delays, even under normal conditions, should not last that long, and investigations are currently underway to ensure compliance with existing regulations.
Adding to the severity of the situation, there were reports of cabin crew members falling ill during the wait. In response, Delta Air Lines confirmed they are investigating the circumstances that led to uncomfortable cabin temperatures and acknowledged the efforts of their staff and first responders at Harry Reid International.
Delta informed Reuters that the flight cancellation occurred slightly over three hours from the departure time, and the aircraft did make at least one gate return. The investigation remains ongoing to determine the cause of the delay and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
