UK-based Vertical Aerospace is making significant strides in the electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector, becoming only the second company globally to execute a piloted thrustborne flight test in a full-scale vectored thrust aircraft. On January 7, 2024, the Vertical Aerospace VX4 took to the skies from the company’s test center at Cotswold Airport (GBA), marking a pivotal moment in the development of eVTOL technology. Pilot Simon Davies expertly managed the transition from piloted thrustborne hover to low-speed flight maneuvers, successfully executing roll, yaw, and spot turn exercises. This milestone follows Vertical Aerospace’s recent approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to extend its Permit to Fly, paving the way for further advancements in aircraft testing.

The VX4’s successful flight test marks its progression from piloted hover to piloted, low-speed maneuvers using lift generated by its advanced propellers. These thrustborne flights are critical for assessing the aircraft’s stability, battery efficiency, control characteristics, aerodynamics, structural and dynamic loads, and overall performance across various speeds. By conducting these tests, Vertical Aerospace can thoroughly evaluate how the VX4 behaves under real-world flight conditions, ensuring the aircraft meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

Vertical Aerospace’s collaboration with the CAA is integral to expanding its Permit to Fly, which is essential for advancing to Phase 3 of testing—wingborne flight tests. This next phase will involve more complex maneuvers and further validate the VX4’s capabilities, bringing the company closer to commercial deployment.

Earlier milestones include a remote thrustborne flight test campaign completed in July 2023 with a full-scale prototype, demonstrating the company’s continuous progress. Additionally, in December 2023, Vertical Aerospace secured a significant investment from Mudrick Capital Management, which committed up to $50 million in new funding. This investment involved converting $130 million of debt into equity at a fixed conversion price, providing the necessary financial support to propel the project forward.

Vertical Aerospace’s achievements place it in elite company, with only Joby Aviation in the United States having accomplished similar piloted thrustborne flight tests. This positions Vertical Aerospace as a leader in the eVTOL industry, driving innovation and setting benchmarks for future developments.
