Viasat Expands European Aviation Network to Serbia

Viasat Inc. has expanded its European Aviation Network coverage to include Serbia, strengthening inflight connectivity performance across southeast Europe. The enhancement, delivered in partnership with Deutsche Telekom, extends high-speed broadband access to airlines operating EAN-equipped aircraft over Serbian airspace and key regional corridors.
The European Aviation Network is a hybrid connectivity solution that combines S-band satellite coverage with a complementary ground component network. By integrating space-based capacity with an extensive terrestrial infrastructure, EAN is designed to deliver low-latency, high-throughput broadband across Europe’s complex and congested airspace. The architecture is particularly suited to the region’s dense traffic flows and frequent aircraft manoeuvres, which can challenge traditional satellite-only systems.
According to Viasat, the expanded footprint has been enabled by activating additional ground stations, enhancing capacity and reliability for flights transiting southeast Europe. The upgrade supports routes to and from the Balkans, as well as services connecting Germany and western Europe with destinations such as Greece. Airlines operating EAN-equipped fleets are expected to benefit from improved signal continuity and performance consistency in a key traffic corridor.
As passenger expectations for onboard connectivity continue to rise, European carriers are investing in next-generation broadband solutions to match the digital experiences travelers enjoy on the ground. Streaming, video conferencing and real-time messaging are now standard inflight demands, placing greater pressure on network resilience and bandwidth efficiency.
Don Buchman, president of Viasat Aviation, said the addition of Serbian coverage reflects proactive network development to meet growing demand. He noted that strengthening connectivity over high-traffic corridors supports a more seamless passenger experience and reinforces airline competitiveness in the European market.
The expansion underscores the strategic importance of hybrid satellite-ground architectures in delivering reliable inflight broadband across Europe. By extending EAN coverage deeper into southeast Europe, Viasat and Deutsche Telekom are enhancing service continuity for airlines while supporting broader digital transformation efforts within the aviation sector.
As European air travel continues to recover and expand, robust connectivity infrastructure remains central to airline product differentiation and passenger satisfaction.
