VietJet Eyes Europe, U.S., & NZ Expansion

VietJet, the dynamic Vietnamese low-cost carrier, is gearing up for an ambitious expansion that will see the airline enter the European market and potentially launch flights to the U.S. later this year. Speaking from the sidelines at Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, Australia, Vice President for Commercial Jay L. Lingeswara outlined the airline’s bold strategy to diversify its international network. With recent successes on long-haul routes to Australia, Europe has now emerged as a primary target for the carrier’s next phase of growth.
The expansion plan comes on the heels of VietJet’s strong performance on its current long-haul flights. Building on these achievements, the airline is keen to launch its inaugural routes to Europe before the end of the year, while also preparing for an eventual entry into the lucrative U.S. market. This dual focus underscores VietJet’s commitment to broadening its international footprint and capitalizing on emerging global travel trends. According to Lingeswara, Europe is the ultimate focus for 2025, and the airline is actively evaluating multiple destinations across the continent.
The carrier is considering several key European cities, including potential destinations in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. VietJet is also exploring the possibility of operating one-stop routes to make its European services more accessible and efficient. One innovative transit option under consideration is Kazakhstan, where VietJet has previously operated flights to Almaty and Astana. The country’s open skies policy, which allows foreign carriers to operate fifth-freedom flights, presents an attractive opportunity for VietJet to streamline its European operations and enhance connectivity.
In addition to its European ambitions, VietJet is set to enter the New Zealand market later this year. The airline is expected to initially operate one-stop services via Australia, further solidifying its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. This move is part of a broader strategy to tap into new markets and offer more travel options to its growing customer base. With New Zealand positioned as an important destination for leisure and business travelers alike, VietJet’s expansion into this market is poised to generate significant interest.
To support its long-haul expansion, VietJet will rely on its existing fleet of seven Airbus A330-300 aircraft, which currently serve major Australian cities and key routes to India. These wide-body jets are well-suited for long-distance travel and offer the reliability and capacity needed for international routes. Additionally, the airline recently firmed up an order for 20 Airbus A330-900s in July 2024, a move that will further bolster its long-haul capabilities and fuel its expansion ambitions over the coming years.
VietJet’s proactive approach to international growth is also reflected in its high-level engagements. Earlier this year, the airline’s founder and Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, visited the U.S. and met with President Donald Trump during a summit focused on strengthening Vietnam-U.S. ties. This visit signals the airline’s intention to explore opportunities in the U.S. market and build strategic relationships that could facilitate its entry into one of the world’s largest aviation markets.
As VietJet sets its sights on Europe, the U.S., and New Zealand, its expansion strategy is expected to not only enhance its global network but also offer travelers more options and competitive fares on long-haul routes. With a clear vision for growth and a robust fleet at its disposal, VietJet is poised to become a significant player in the international aviation arena, redefining connectivity for passengers traveling across continents.
