Vietjet Orders 20 Airbus A330-900s for Long-Haul Expansion

Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet has placed a firm order for 20 Airbus A330-900 widebody aircraft to support its international growth strategy over the next decade. The order was signed on May 26, 2025, in Hanoi by Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Wouter van Wersch, President of Airbus International, during a formal ceremony attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and Vietnamese President Luong Cuong.
The agreement marks a significant step in Vietjet’s ambition to expand its long-haul operations, enabling the airline to boost frequencies across the Asia-Pacific region and prepare for the launch of new intercontinental services to Europe. With this new deal, Vietjet has doubled its total commitment to the A330neo to 40 aircraft, reinforcing its partnership with Airbus and solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing low-cost carriers in the global market.
The A330-900, part of the A330neo family, is powered by fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and has a range of 13,300 kilometers, making it ideal for long-haul operations. The aircraft is designed for superior passenger comfort, offering increased personal space, improved cabin lighting, larger overhead bins, and the latest in-flight entertainment systems. It is also one of the most environmentally advanced widebody jets available, capable of flying with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and targeting full SAF capability by 2030.
Airbus Executive Vice President of Sales, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, praised the airline’s decision, stating that Vietjet’s selection of the A330neo reaffirms its commitment to combining affordable air travel with advanced technology and sustainability. Chairwoman Phuong Thao highlighted that Airbus aircraft have consistently supported Vietjet’s rapid growth and will continue to enable the airline’s global network expansion.
Vietjet currently operates an all-Airbus fleet, including 115 A320 Family aircraft and seven A330-300s. It uses its widebody aircraft to serve long-haul destinations such as Australia, India, and Kazakhstan. The new A330-900s will enhance capacity and fuel efficiency on these routes while providing the flexibility needed to launch new services to Europe and beyond.
The new order further cements Airbus’s presence in the Asia-Pacific market and builds on the A330 Family’s global success. By the end of April 2025, the A330 series had received more than 1,800 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide. Vietjet’s growing investment in both the A330neo and A320neo families reflects its ambition to lead in both short- and long-haul segments, while maintaining its low-cost model and advancing its environmental goals.
