VietJetAir Plans 100 More Airbus A321neo Jets, Paris Air Show Deal

VietJetAir is reportedly preparing to place an order for approximately 100 additional Airbus A321neo aircraft, potentially announcing the deal at this month’s Paris Air Show, according to Bloomberg. The new order would be in addition to the 76 A321-200NX and 20 A321-200NY(XLR) jets already scheduled for delivery.
Sources familiar with the talks say VietJetAir is seeking more of Airbus’s highest-capacity narrowbody jets to support its long-term growth strategy, though negotiations are still ongoing and no final decision has been confirmed.
At a recent shareholders’ meeting, VietJet Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo emphasized the airline’s plan to expand both its fleet and route network over the next decade as part of its aggressive growth model.
While VietJetAir is expanding its Airbus fleet, it also holds a significant Boeing 737 MAX order. Recently, it reassigned 50 Boeing 737-8s to Thai VietJetAir, in which it owns an 8.3% stake. Separately, VietJet’s parent Sovico Group, which co-owns a 51% stake in Kazakhstan’s Qazaq Air, plans to supply that airline with at least 20 MAX aircraft over the next five years. As a result, not all of VietJetAir’s existing order backlog will be operated directly by the airline.
Currently, VietJetAir operates an all-Airbus fleet of 96 aircraft, including 17 A320-200s, 36 A321-200s, 11 A321-200Ns, 25 A321-200NX, and 7 A330-300s. The carrier serves 55 airports across 14 countries.
