Vietnam Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vietcombank to secure financing for the purchase of 50 narrowbody aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet expansion strategy. The agreement, finalized on April 23, 2025, involves prepayments and long-term loans for the aircraft, which will be delivered between 2026 and 2032.

The new aircraft will play a crucial role in Vietnam Airlines’ operational plans as the carrier looks to strengthen its capabilities ahead of 2040. The airline’s goal is to expand its short and medium-haul network, particularly in Southeast and Northeast Asia, to keep pace with growing demand for air travel in these regions. The investment by Vietcombank is expected to enable Vietnam Airlines to remain competitive as the demand for domestic and regional flights continues to rise.

The MoU was signed by Vietnam Airlines’ Director and CEO Le Hong Ha and Vietcombank’s Director and CEO Le Quang Vinh. According to the airline, the investment will allow it to increase its fleet and strengthen its presence in key markets, where competition is intensifying, particularly in Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietcombank have a long-standing relationship, with the bank having previously supported the airline’s fleet expansion, including financing for Boeing 787-9s, Airbus A350s, and A321s. This latest deal follows another recent financing agreement signed by Vietnam Airlines with CitiBank in April 2025, securing $560 million for its ongoing fleet expansion.

The backing from Vietcombank represents a significant move in Vietnam Airlines’ growth strategy, which aims to enhance its position in the increasingly competitive aviation market in Asia. With this partnership, the airline is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for flights and expand its footprint across both domestic and international routes.
