Viking Cruises Unveils New Ocean Ship Viking Vela
Viking Cruises has officially introduced its latest addition to the esteemed ocean fleet, naming the new vessel Viking Vela. The naming ceremony, a longstanding tradition for the cruise line, took place in Trieste, Italy, a significant location as it serves as the headquarters for Fincantieri, the renowned shipbuilder partnering with Viking. This choice of venue underscores the strong relationship between Viking Cruises and Fincantieri, honoring the shipbuilder’s pivotal role in bringing the Viking Vela to life.
The ceremony was graced by Ivana Elice, Vice President and Project Manager of Fincantieri’s Cruise Business Unit, who was named the ceremonial godmother of Viking Vela. Elice’s selection is a testament to her extensive experience and dedication, having overseen the design and engineering of Viking’s ocean ships for over a decade. Her role as godmother symbolizes the close collaboration and mutual respect between Viking Cruises and Fincantieri, highlighting the meticulous care and expertise invested in the creation of Viking Vela.
“We are proud to welcome the Viking Vela to our growing, award-winning fleet,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Viking Cruises. “With Fincantieri as our partner, we believe we have built the world’s most elegant fleet of small ocean ships. We thank Ivana Elice for being the godmother of the Viking Vela. In her role at Fincantieri, she has cared for our ocean ships during their construction just as a godmother would, and we are very appreciative of her contributions as a member of the extended Viking family.”
Viking Vela stands out as the newest sister ship in Viking’s prestigious ocean fleet, accommodating up to 998 guests. The ship boasts 499 all-veranda staterooms, each designed with Scandinavian elegance to provide guests with stunning views and luxurious comfort. The light-filled public spaces create an inviting atmosphere, while several al fresco dining options offer delightful culinary experiences against the backdrop of the open sea.
Beyond its aesthetic and comfort features, Viking Vela is at the forefront of sustainability in the cruise industry. The vessel is designed to incorporate the latest sustainability technologies as they become available. Viking Cruises is actively developing a partial hybrid propulsion system based on liquid hydrogen and fuel cells, aiming to achieve zero-emissions sailing in environmentally sensitive areas in the future. This commitment to sustainability reflects Viking’s dedication to minimizing its environmental impact and promoting eco-friendly cruising practices.
Viking Vela is set to commence her inaugural season in the Mediterranean, a region renowned for its rich history, stunning coastlines, and vibrant cultures. Following her Mediterranean debut, the ship will transition to Northern Europe, where she will explore some of the most picturesque and culturally significant destinations in the region. This strategic itinerary allows guests to experience the best of both worlds – the historical grandeur of the Mediterranean and the breathtaking natural beauty of Northern Europe.
The launch of Viking Vela marks a significant milestone for Viking Cruises, reinforcing the company’s position as a leader in the luxury ocean cruise market. With its blend of elegant design, cutting-edge sustainability features, and thoughtfully curated itineraries, Viking Vela promises to deliver an unparalleled cruising experience. Guests aboard Viking Vela can look forward to exceptional service, immersive cultural experiences, and the tranquil luxury that Viking Cruises is renowned for.
As Viking Cruises continues to expand and enhance its fleet, the introduction of Viking Vela underscores the company’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the cruise industry. With strong partnerships, visionary leadership, and a focus on sustainable practices, Viking Cruises is well-positioned to offer unforgettable journeys to discerning travelers around the world.
