Viking Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ships

Viking is set to revolutionize the maritime industry with a major new order for two hydrogen-powered cruise ships that will mark a turning point in sustainable ocean travel. The company has placed orders with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for two new-build vessels, Viking Libra and Viking Astrea, with the delivery of the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, Viking Libra, scheduled for late 2026 and Viking Astrea set to join the fleet in 2027. This bold investment in clean energy solutions underscores Viking’s commitment to reducing fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions across its fleet, while offering guests an unmatched luxury experience at sea.

The Viking Libra, a 54,300 gross-ton vessel, will feature 499 staterooms and accommodate up to 998 guests. What sets this ship apart is its innovative propulsion system, which relies partially on liquefied hydrogen and advanced fuel cell technology, delivering up to six megawatts of power. This groundbreaking technology not only provides a true zero-emission solution but also demonstrates Viking’s dedication to future-proofing its operations amid increasing environmental challenges. With Viking Libra leading the charge, the company is taking a principled stand by investing in hydrogen as the cornerstone for a cleaner, more sustainable future in maritime transportation.

Viking’s decision to integrate hydrogen technology into its fleet comes at a time when other industry players are also exploring eco-friendly alternatives. In 2023, Explora Journeys ordered two new hydrogen-powered ships from Fincantieri, though those vessels are not expected to set sail until 2027 and 2028. By advancing the delivery of Viking Libra to late 2026, Viking is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the cruise industry, offering a competitive edge in a market that increasingly values environmental responsibility.

Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking, expressed his enthusiasm for the new vessels, stating, “From the outset, we have designed our river and ocean ships thoughtfully to reduce their fuel consumption, and we are very proud the Viking Libra and the Viking Astrea will be even more environmentally friendly. Viking made the principled decision to invest in hydrogen, which offers a true zero-emission solution. We look forward to welcoming the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship to our fleet in 2026.” His comments highlight Viking’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to shaping a sustainable future for the cruise industry.

In a related development, Fincantieri’s commitment to innovation and responsible shipbuilding is equally evident. Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Fincantieri, remarked, “With the Viking Libra, we are not only delivering the world’s first cruise ship powered by hydrogen stored on board, but we are also reinforcing our commitment to shaping the future of sustainable maritime transportation. In addition to these two new vessels, Viking and Fincantieri have also signed contracts for the construction of two more ocean ships slated for delivery in 2031, with an option for two additional ships in 2033. With all these new ships on order, Viking expects to take delivery of 26 river ships by 2028 and 11 ocean ships by 2031, further expanding its global presence and commitment to sustainable cruising. These initiatives are set to redefine luxury and environmental responsibility in the maritime world, positioning Viking as a true leader in the transition to greener, cleaner ocean travel.
