Virgin Australia Boosts Fleet Renewal with Order for Six Additional 737-8s

Virgin Australia (VA) is intensifying its fleet modernization efforts with an order for six additional Boeing 737-8 aircraft, expanding its commitment to a total of 14 units. The new aircraft are set to be delivered by the end of 2024, reinforcing the airline’s strategic focus on meeting growing travel demand and enhancing its overall market competitiveness.

Alistair Hartley, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, emphasized the importance of investing in a more modern, sustainable, and streamlined fleet to cater to customer needs and ensure long-term business success. With the global travel demand remaining robust, Virgin Australia aims to position itself as a key player by offering value and choice in the market.

Currently operating three 737-8s, Virgin Australia is slated to receive almost one new aircraft per month in 2024, contributing to its fleet renewal and expansion strategy. While the airline did not specify whether the newly ordered 737-8s would come directly from Boeing or through lessors, it reaffirmed its commitment to a total 737 MAX fleet of 39 units.

Prior to this announcement, Virgin Australia had firm orders for three 737-8s and twenty-two 737-10s directly from the manufacturer, according to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module. The carrier operates a diverse fleet that includes 737-700s, 737-800s (including those on the Virgin Australia International AOC), A320-200s, and Fokker aircraft. Regional operations are outsourced to Alliance Airlines and Corporate Air (Australia), further enhancing Virgin Australia’s operational reach.
