Virgin Voyages Makes Waves in Sydney: Sir Richard Branson Celebrates Inaugural Australian Season
In a momentous occasion for the cruise industry, Virgin Voyages, the innovative cruise line founded by Sir Richard Branson, has made a grand entry into Sydney, marking its inaugural summer sailing season in Australia. The event was nothing short of spectacular, with the Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages’ latest addition, arriving in Sydney Harbour at 1 p.m. local time to a warm welcome led by Sir Richard Branson himself.
The arrival of Resilient Lady was a visual spectacle, greeted by Branson aboard a classic wooden speedboat as the ship sailed through the Heads into the harbor. But the festivities didn’t stop there. In true Virgin fashion, Sir Richard Branson elevated the celebration by scaling the Sydney Harbour Bridge, taking over the iconic BridgeClimb experience in a unique Virgin Voyages style.
From the bridge’s summit, Branson watched as the Resilient Lady docked at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay, greeted by the cheers of excited passengers aboard the adults-only ship. This moment marked a significant milestone for Virgin Voyages, being the first travel brand from the Virgin Group to venture into the Australian market since the launch of Virgin Australia in 2000.
The event, captured by helicopters and drones, reflected Sir Richard Branson’s flair for creating unforgettable experiences, ensuring that Resilient Lady’s debut in Sydney was truly memorable against the backdrop of one of the world’s most scenic cities.
Sir Richard Branson shared his excitement about this historic occasion, saying, “Watching Resilient Lady enter Circular Quay from the Sydney Harbour Bridge was a thrilling moment, highlighting our commitment to extraordinary experiences. Australians have always embraced Virgin brands, and we’re confident they’ll love Virgin Voyages’ unique approach to cruising.”
Virgin Voyages CEO, Nirmal Saverimuttu, also expressed enthusiasm for the new venture. “We’re excited to introduce Virgin Voyages to Australia, a country known for its love of holidays and cruising. Our goal was to create a cruise experience that Sir Richard would enjoy with his friends, and we believe we’ve achieved that with our focus on exceptional destinations, dining, entertainment, and wellness.”
Destination NSW CEO, Steve Cox, welcomed the Resilient Lady, highlighting the importance of the cruise industry to the local economy. “The arrival of Virgin Voyages in Sydney is a significant boost to our visitor economy, and we look forward to offering unforgettable experiences to passengers.”
Virgin Voyages, awarded the No.1 large cruise line in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2023 Readers Choice Awards, is set to redefine cruising in Australia. Known for its adult-only policy, the cruise line offers sophisticated designs, wellness amenities, Michelin-inspired dining, and captivating entertainment.
Resilient Lady will spend two nights in Sydney before heading to Melbourne, her new homeport for the summer. The ship’s Aussie MerMaiden voyage on December 11 will journey to Tasmania, with stops in Burnie and Hobart, offering passengers an exceptional experience on board and ashore.
