Volaris Airlines Faces Up to $300,000 Fine for Tarmac Delay Violations

The U.S. Department of Transportation has imposed a fine of up to $300,000 on Mexican airline Volaris for breaching federal tarmac delay regulations. According to the agency, Volaris violated rules that prohibit international flights from keeping passengers on the tarmac for more than four hours without offering an opportunity to deplane.

The incidents in question occurred in 2021 in Houston and in 2022 in St. Louis, where Volaris flights experienced significant tarmac delays without allowing passengers to disembark. As a consequence, Volaris has agreed to pay $150,000 immediately, with an additional $150,000 penalty if similar infractions occur within the next year.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that this enforcement action underscores the department’s dedication to protecting consumer rights and ensuring airline accountability. Volaris responded by stating the delays were due to the saturation of air terminals and affirmed their commitment to compliance with all applicable laws and prioritization of passenger safety.

This fine is part of a broader strategy by the Department of Transportation to enforce consumer protection laws more stringently. Earlier in the year, the department announced its intention to seek higher penalties to deter future violations. This follows a record $4.1 million fine against American Airlines for similar violations and a $135,000 penalty imposed on British Airways for a 2017 incident.

The increased fines highlight the department’s focus on strengthening compliance with tarmac delay regulations, aiming to enhance the overall passenger experience and uphold strict operational standards within the airline industry.
