Volotea to Close Athens Base After Summer 2025

Volotea has announced the closure of its Athens base after the 2025 summer season, ending a six-year presence in the Greek capital. Despite the base closure, the airline will maintain its flight schedule to and from Athens, offering 330,000 annual seats and over 100 routes through its codeshare agreement with Aegean Airlines, its partner and minority shareholder.

Athens, currently Volotea’s only base in Greece, represents the smallest share of its network, accounting for just 0.7% of the airline’s weekly capacity. Most of Volotea’s capacity is concentrated in France, Spain, and Italy, which together comprise over 90% of its operations.

Aegean Airlines, which acquired a 13% stake in Volotea in 2024 with an option to increase to 21%, continues to partner with the Spanish airline, offering seamless connectivity via shared routes. Volotea will relocate its two Athens-based A320-200 aircraft and is providing its local staff opportunities to relocate within its network.

Meanwhile, Greek competitor SKY Express has launched a recruitment drive targeting Volotea’s Athens-based employees.

Volotea’s fleet includes 42 aircraft, comprising 18 Airbus A319-100s and 24 A320-200s. The closure underscores Volotea’s strategic focus on its core markets while maintaining its presence in Greece through codeshare operations.

The airline’s decision highlights a shift in regional market dynamics, with Greek competitors seeking to capitalize on Volotea’s reduced local footprint.
