Warning of Risks to Minorities, Immigrants, and LGBTQ+ Travelers in Florida

Recently, a significant travel advisory was issued by the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ rights organization in the US, in collaboration with various civil rights groups. This advisory targets the state of Florida, a renowned tourist hotspot that welcomed over 137.5 million visitors last year, highlighting potential risks to minorities, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The advisory responds to a series of new laws and policies passed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature. These measures are perceived as hostile towards the LGBTQ+ community and include restrictions on abortion access and changes to firearm regulations, such as allowing concealed weapon carrying without a permit. The advisory’s purpose is to raise awareness among potential visitors about these changes and their implications.

Importantly, the Human Rights Campaign clarified that this advisory is not a call for a boycott nor is it intended to dissuade individuals from visiting Florida. Instead, it serves as a call to action, urging travelers to voice their opposition to these controversial policies. Alongside, Equality Florida has also issued a similar advisory, specifically cautioning LGBTQ+ individuals about the potential risks to their health, safety, and freedom in the state.

The issuance of this advisory has prompted a mixed response from Florida’s political figures. Governor Ron DeSantis’ spokesperson has labeled the advisory as a mere “stunt,” while Senator Rick Scott humorously issued a “formal travel advisory” for “socialists” planning to visit Florida, mocking the language used in the NAACP advisory.

Amidst escalating tensions between civil rights organizations and Florida lawmakers, these travel advisories seek to bring to light the possible effects of the state’s new laws on marginalized communities. They aim to encourage potential visitors to make well-informed decisions when considering travel to Florida, especially those who may be directly impacted by these legislative changes.
