Share

WestJet is set to boost its network capacity by 10% next summer, including a 12% increase in domestic seats, as the airline introduces 11 new routes and enhances service across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. This expansion marks a significant growth phase, supported by the addition of nine leased Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

New Destinations and Route Highlights
Domestic Additions
WestJet will reconnect with two Canadian cities, Sudbury, Ontario, and Sydney, Nova Scotia, expanding its domestic network to 41 airports with over 3,000 weekly departures.

Transborder Expansion
WestJet will add three new U.S. destinations: Anchorage, Alaska; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Salt Lake City, Utah. Notably, the new Edmonton-Salt Lake City route will provide enhanced connectivity to Delta Air Lines’ hub. Transborder operations will grow by 11%, serving 29 U.S. airports with more than 900 weekly departures.

Transatlantic Growth
Europe sees significant investment, including:

A new route from St. John’s to Paris Charles de Gaulle starting May 2025.
The return of Halifax-Paris and St. John’s-Dublin services.
Extended seasons for Halifax-Edinburgh and Halifax-Dublin routes.
Increased frequencies on St. John’s-London Gatwick, growing from 3X to 4X weekly.

Fleet and Operational Enhancements
The nine leased Boeing 737-8 aircraft—previously operated by Lynx Air—enable WestJet to manage fleet delays while refreshing cabin interiors to ensure consistency.

Recovery and Expansion Strategy
Despite operational disruptions from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which impacted 25% of its Q4 2024 seat capacity and are expected to reduce revenue by $30-$40 million, WestJet is focused on long-term growth.

Drew Wells, WestJet’s CCO, stated, “Our expanded network reflects a commitment to connecting more communities and meeting growing demand for leisure and business travel.”

Looking Ahead
With the addition of new routes, extended services, and increased frequencies, WestJet aims to enhance connectivity across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, solidifying its position as a leading airline for both domestic and international travelers.
