WestJet Pauses Rollout of Non-Adjustable Economy Seats

WestJet Airlines said Friday it will pause the rollout of non-adjustable economy seats starting next week, following customer backlash over plans to charge extra for seats with adjustable features.
The Canadian carrier had been testing the new seats as part of its broader ancillary revenue strategy, which aims to unbundle traditional services and offer lower base fares with optional paid upgrades. However, the move drew criticism from passengers and consumer advocates, who argued that adjustable seating should remain a standard feature rather than an add-on.
By halting the rollout, WestJet appears to be reassessing how far it can push its à-la-carte pricing model without damaging customer satisfaction and brand perception. The airline said it will review feedback before deciding whether to proceed with the seating changes.
The decision highlights growing tension across the airline industry as carriers seek new sources of revenue while balancing passenger expectations for comfort and value. WestJet has not indicated whether the non-adjustable seats could be reintroduced in the future or modified based on the feedback received.
