What’s New for Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport (ATH) recorded a historic 31.9 million passengers in 2024, a 25% increase over 2019 and a 13% rise year-over-year. The strong momentum continues into 2025, with passenger traffic up 11% in the first two months alone.

Much of ATH’s 2024 growth stemmed from the U.S. market, with new transatlantic routes from Norse Atlantic to New York and United Airlines to Chicago. Delta and American Airlines also extended seasonal routes with increased frequencies. In June 2025, Norse launched ATH’s first nonstop flight to the U.S. West Coast with service to Los Angeles. By year-end, ATH expects to serve nine U.S. destinations, reinforcing the country’s position as its top international source market.

Asian connectivity is also expanding. Sichuan Airlines began service to Chengdu, and Juneyao Air increased Shanghai frequencies to five weekly flights. ATH aims to launch direct India service by 2026.

In Europe, easyJet added multiple new routes in 2024, boosting passenger capacity by 36%. The airline recently announced a new route to Alicante for summer 2025.

To support continued growth, ATH plans to expand terminal infrastructure, with major works beginning in 2026 and completion expected by 2032. The airport is also set to achieve net zero carbon emissions by October 2025—25 years ahead of global aviation targets.

Speaking at Routes Europe 2025, ATH’s marketing director Ioanna Papadopoulou emphasized long-haul growth, strategic airline partnerships, and the value of Routes 360 as a key platform to engage with carriers and promote Athens as a growing hub.
