Which Carriers Led 2024’s On-Time Airline Rankings?

Air travel demand surged in 2024, fueled by a renewed appetite for international journeys and a strong rebound in leisure and business trips. From January to October, global revenue-passenger miles (RPMs) rose nearly 11% compared to the same period the previous year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Looking ahead to 2025, IATA projects that aircraft departures will reach 40 million—an increase of 4.6% from 2024—indicating continued growth in the industry.

Despite challenges such as new aircraft shortages and lingering financial pressures, many airlines made strides in scheduling, staffing, and operations. Cirium, an aviation data firm, recently released its annual ranking of carriers by punctuality, defining an on-time arrival as any flight that lands within 15 minutes of its scheduled time. Notably, no airline in 2024 achieved a punctuality rate above 90%, underscoring the complexity of running reliable operations amid soaring demand.

Global On-Time Leaders
Topping the global charts, Aeromexico took first place with an on-time performance rate of 86.7%, reflecting the carrier’s robust operational strategy in a year marked by capacity expansion. Following closely, Saudia Airlines clocked in at 86.35% punctuality, leveraging its position as a major Middle Eastern carrier. Delta Air Lines, at 83.46%, demonstrated that even large legacy carriers can excel at on-time arrivals despite challenges like the CrowdStrike outage in July, which led to thousands of flight cancellations.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 global carriers were LATAM Airlines (82.89%), Qatar Airways (82.83%), Azul Airlines (82.42%), Avianca (81.80%), Iberia (81.58%), Scandinavian Airlines (81.40%), and United Airlines (80.93%). These performances underscore the fact that punctuality is no longer just a nice-to-have but a competitive differentiator in a crowded air travel market. With passengers paying greater attention to reliability and travel disruptions, many carriers have stepped up their operational efficiency to attract and retain flyers.

North American Rankings
The battle for on-time dominance in North America saw Delta Air Lines finish first (83.46%), followed by United Airlines (80.93%), which crept into the global top 10. Alaska Airlines (79.25%) claimed third place in the region, highlighting its skill in juggling complex weather patterns and remote routes. Fourth and fifth place went to American Airlines (77.78%) and Southwest Airlines (77.77%) respectively, illustrating that even the largest domestic fleets can maintain respectable timeliness.

Spirit Airlines (76.05%), JetBlue Airways (74.53%), Frontier Airlines (71.57%), Air Canada (71.36%), and WestJet (70.99%) completed the North American list. Although these punctuality rates are lower than those of Delta and United, they still show gradual improvements over past years, with many carriers refocusing efforts on operational enhancements and customer satisfaction.

Meeting Surging Demand
In the face of record travel volumes, airlines raced to expand routes and premium seating options to capture the lucrative long-haul market. While many carriers overcame acute staffing shortages seen in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, operational challenges remain. Nonetheless, these rankings suggest that airlines globally are making strides in improving timeliness. As passenger numbers continue to climb and IATA forecasts more than 40 million departures in 2025, punctual operations will remain a critical benchmark for airlines striving to stand out in an increasingly competitive industry.
