Wind Gusts Dislodge Celebrity Edge in Alaska

A sudden wind squall in Juneau, Alaska caused a brief but dramatic incident on June 16, when the Celebrity Edge cruise ship broke free from its moorings while docked in the state’s capital. The ship, operated by Celebrity Cruises, was pushed away from the pier by strong gusts of wind reaching 30 to 35 miles per hour, according to local reports.
The unexpected weather event sent the 130,000-ton ship drifting slightly from the dock, an incident that was quickly captured on video and shared widely on social media. In the footage, the large vessel can be seen pulling away from the pier as lines come loose, with onlookers expressing surprise and concern over the rare occurrence.
Despite the startling visuals, no injuries were reported, and Celebrity Cruises confirmed that the ship sustained no damage. In a statement shared with USA Today, the cruise line noted that the captain quickly regained control of the ship and maneuvered it safely back to the dock.
“Our captain maneuvered the ship back to the dock where passengers and crew boarded to resume the scheduled itinerary,” the company said in the emailed statement.
The Celebrity Edge, one of the most innovative ships in Celebrity’s fleet, was on a scheduled Alaska sailing when the weather incident occurred. The ship had docked in Juneau earlier that day for a routine port call, giving passengers the chance to explore Alaska’s scenic capital. The itinerary was not affected by the temporary disruption.
According to the National Weather Service, sudden squalls and gusty wind conditions are not uncommon in Alaska’s coastal regions during the summer season. Still, it is rare for cruise ships—especially large vessels like the Celebrity Edge—to be dislodged from their moorings, underscoring the intensity of the storm cell that hit the area.
Port authorities in Juneau worked alongside the ship’s crew to monitor the situation and ensure safety protocols were followed. The ship was securely re-moored shortly after the incident, and port operations returned to normal.
The Celebrity Edge, known for its distinctive outward-facing design, Magic Carpet platform, and luxury amenities, continues to operate its Alaska cruise schedule through the summer of 2025, with itineraries that include popular destinations like Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Hubbard Glacier.
While rare, weather-related mooring incidents are a reminder of the unpredictable nature of maritime travel and the importance of quick, skilled response by the ship’s officers and crew. Celebrity Cruises emphasized that safety remains its top priority, and credited the onboard team for their swift and professional handling of the situation.
As of now, the Celebrity Edge is continuing its voyage as planned, and no further delays or issues have been reported.
