Windstar Cruises is undertaking a significant multi-year, multi-million-dollar renovation project to revitalize its classic sailing yachts. The ambitious initiative, announced today, will transform the Wind Class ships – Wind Star, Wind Spirit, and Wind Surf – by 2026, with a focus on creating spaces that enhance relaxation and foster connections.

Phase-Wise Renovation Plan

The renovation plan is designed to unfold in phases, each targeting different aspects of the ships:

  • Wind Star: The first phase of renovation is already complete. This yacht, accommodating up to 148 guests, now boasts a refreshed lobby, lounge, spa, fitness center, and pool deck. Enhancements include new artwork, additional WiFi access points, and larger TVs in every cabin. Starting in 2026, Wind Star will see further updates to its staterooms, main dining room, and the lunch and breakfast restaurant.
  • Wind Surf: With a capacity of 342 guests, Wind Surf’s renovation will take place in two phases, scheduled for 2024 and 2026. The plan includes a comprehensive refresh of all public areas, featuring new layouts, lighting, furniture, floor coverings, art, and more. Additionally, staterooms and suites will be upgraded with new decor, furniture, and interactive televisions.
  • Wind Spirit: The 148-passenger Wind Spirit is slated for a total overhaul by 2025, ensuring that the yacht meets the modern standards expected by today’s cruisers.

Aesthetic Inspiration and Design Philosophy

The interior design for these renovations draws inspiration from classic and modern yacht architecture. Jessica Payne, overseeing the interior design for Windstar, describes the updated aesthetic as a blend of fun and relief inspired by sails, the sea, the cities visited, and guests themselves. She emphasizes creating an ambiance akin to boarding a private yacht, coupled with the service of a luxury boutique hotel.

Building on Previous Successes

This latest renovation initiative follows Windstar’s $250 million refurbishment of Star Breeze, Star Legend, and Star Pride. The previous project included a dramatic transformation of Star Breeze, which involved cutting the ship in half and adding a new section, showcasing Windstar’s commitment to maintaining and improving its fleet.

In summary, Windstar Cruises’ renovation of its Wind Class ships demonstrates a significant investment in enhancing guest experience and maintaining the luxurious, intimate ambiance that the line is known for. These upgrades are set to provide guests with an elevated sailing experience, combining the charm of classic yachts with contemporary luxury and comfort.
