Windstar Launches River-to-Ocean Cruises With New Yacht

Windstar Cruises is introducing a new category of travel—river-to-ocean cruising—designed to connect inland waterways with coastal and ocean destinations in a single, seamless journey. The concept aims to give travel advisors new opportunities to retain loyal river cruise clients while expanding their offerings into broader, more diverse itineraries.

After experiencing iconic rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, Douro, and Mekong, many travelers are seeking their next step. Windstar’s new approach bridges that gap, allowing guests to transition from river cruising into ocean exploration without sacrificing the intimacy and destination-focused experience they value.

Central to this strategy is the launch of Star Explorer, Windstar’s newest all-suite yacht, scheduled to debut in December 2026. Designed specifically for river-to-ocean travel, the 224-guest vessel can navigate smaller waterways that are inaccessible to larger ocean ships, while also reaching coastal ports beyond the scope of traditional river vessels. This flexibility enables access to less crowded, culturally rich destinations that appeal to high-value travelers.

According to Janet Bava, the model is a natural evolution for the cruise market. River cruise guests are among the most engaged and loyal segments, but many have already explored major European waterways. By offering a hybrid experience, advisors can retain these clients while introducing them to new regions and travel styles.

The river-to-ocean concept also opens opportunities for themed travel, particularly in wine-focused itineraries across regions such as Bordeaux and Portugal. Group pricing incentives, typically offering 5% to 10% savings depending on availability, provide advisors with additional flexibility to package and promote these experiences.

Star Explorer’s inaugural 2027 program highlights the versatility of the concept. The 10-night Impressionist France itinerary links Bordeaux with London via the Seine and Thames, including extended stays in Bordeaux, St. Malo, and Paris. The eight-night Connoisseur’s Delight voyage combines France, Spain, and Portugal, blending river cruising with coastal culinary experiences. Moroccan Markets & Iberian Icons explores Seville via the Guadalquivir before extending into Iberian and North African destinations, while the 10-night Ireland Circumnavigation pairs a River Lee call in Cork with a broader coastal journey.

By combining river intimacy with ocean reach, Windstar is redefining how travelers experience multi-region itineraries. The new model not only enhances product differentiation but also provides travel advisors with a scalable way to grow revenue while maintaining strong client relationships in an evolving cruise market.
