Windstar Strengthens Fleet Ops Ahead of New Ship Launches
Windstar Cruises has announced key changes to its Fleet Operations leadership team as the line continues to prioritize innovation, sustainability, and talent development. The updates come at a pivotal time as Windstar prepares to debut two new ships—Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026—and expand its portfolio of curated global itineraries.
Paul Barrett, vice president of marine and technical operations, has retired as of July 1, 2025, after more than 40 years in the maritime industry. Since joining Windstar in 2017, Barrett has played a significant role in advancing operational performance, safety protocols, and environmental stewardship. His departure marks the end of a chapter defined by excellence and thoughtful leadership.
To build on Barrett’s legacy and better support the brand’s global growth, Windstar has created two specialized executive roles. Captain Alan Wilson has been appointed vice president of marine operations. Wilson brings over 25 years of maritime leadership, most recently serving as VP of marine operations at Holland America Group. Known for his strategic vision and steady leadership, he has overseen fleet navigation, safety optimization, and crisis management, including coordinating large-scale crew repatriations during the COVID-19 pandemic. His efforts in bridge design for new-generation yachts have also earned industry recognition. Wilson will be based at Windstar’s Miami headquarters.
Giovanni (Gio) Canu has been promoted to vice president of technical operations. With more than three decades of maritime expertise and senior roles at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Carnival Cruise Line, Canu is a champion of decarbonization and energy efficiency. His experience spans dry dock execution, sustainable engineering practices, and implementation of alternative fuels—key areas of focus as Windstar continues to modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental impact.
Stijn Creupelandt, Windstar’s Chief Operations Officer, acknowledged the impact of Barrett’s tenure and expressed confidence in the new leadership. “Paul will be greatly missed, but we’re proud to foster a team with such depth and passion for the Windstar way,” said Creupelandt. “Alan and Gio’s leadership reflect our values of innovation, safety, and personalized service—qualities that ensure our guests always feel at home, wherever our yachts may roam.”
These leadership changes come as Windstar prepares to introduce its next-generation small ships and expand its immersive itinerary offerings. With a refined fleet and seasoned operations team, the line remains focused on delivering its signature “180 Degrees from Ordinary” cruising experience—blending luxurious comfort, adventurous spirit, and access to exceptional destinations.
