Wizz Air Launches Yerevan Base to Add New Routes

Wizz Air, the largest international airline in Armenia, will expand its presence with a new base in Yerevan opening in October. The carrier plans to station two Airbus A321neo aircraft at Zvartnots International Airport, marking the airline’s 34th base and enabling it to almost double flight frequencies from Armenia’s capital. Roland Tischner, managing director for Wizz Air Hungary, says the additional aircraft will underpin a significant ramp-up in service and support growing demand among regional travelers.

Once the Yerevan base launches, Wizz Air will introduce seven new routes to Bari and Naples in Italy; Bucharest in Romania; Hamburg and Memmingen in Germany; Nice in France; and Paphos in Cyprus. The airline will also resume flights to Prague after a two-year hiatus. OAG Schedules Analyser data shows that six of the announced routes are currently unserved, underlining Wizz Air’s role in opening fresh connections and offering travelers more options for direct travel to and from Armenia.

Wizz Air first entered the Armenian market in June 2020 with services from Vienna and Vilnius and has carried over 2.2 million passengers on its routes. During the summer 2025 season, the carrier operates eight services to Yerevan from Budapest, Dortmund, Larnaca, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Venice Marco Polo, Sofia and Vienna, offering approximately 370,000 departing seats—an increase of more than 22 percent over last year. The carrier’s expanding network offers travelers unprecedented choice and convenience.

The planned expansion positions Wizz Air as the second-largest airline in Armenia, with a 16.1 percent market share behind FlyOne Armenia’s 20.6 percent, as total outbound capacity from Yerevan is projected to reach 2.29 million seats during summer 2025—a rise of nearly 17 percent that returns capacity levels to the record highs of 2023 before FlyArna suspended operations. These figures highlight the resilience and appeal of Armenia as a growing aviation market.

The base launch follows the Armenian government’s approval of a route development program designed to boost inbound passenger traffic through subsidies for services from Yerevan and Gyumri to unserved destinations. Officials forecast that the initiative will drive a five to six percent annual increase in passenger volumes, stimulating tourism and encouraging more international carriers to invest in Armenia. However, FlyOne Armenia and Shirak Avia have cautioned that generous subsidies for foreign airlines could deepen competition imbalances and threaten local operators.

Wizz Air will roll out its new routes in phases, with services to Prague and Hamburg beginning October 1, followed by Paphos and Nice on October 2. Naples flights start October 16, Bari and Bucharest on October 26, and Memmingen on October 28. Guests will check in with Wizz Air’s mobile app or website, and one-way fares from Yerevan are expected to launch at attractive introductory rates. These additions will offer travelers more direct connections, shorter travel times and competitive fares between Yerevan and key European cities, strengthening tourism and business travel links while boosting local economies through increased visitor spending and engagement.

As Wizz Air doubles its footprint in Armenia, travelers can book the new nonstop routes through the Wizz Air website or app. One-way fares from Yerevan will start at competitive introductory rates, enabling passengers to explore Europe with confidence as the airline cements its regional leadership.
