Wizz Air to Launch Budapest-Mumbai Flights in Late 2025

Wizz Air is expected to launch daily flights between Budapest and Mumbai International Airport by October or November 2025, according to Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó during an official visit to India. He confirmed that the low-cost airline has secured all required permits to operate the route.

The service will be operated using Wizz Air’s new long-range aircraft, most likely the Airbus A321XLR, which is part of the airline’s strategic expansion into long-haul routes. Szijjártó also revealed that talks are ongoing for a potential Budapest to Delhi International route in the future. However, the current bilateral air services agreement between India and Hungary, signed in 1966, only includes rights for flights to Mumbai.

Although Wizz Air has not officially commented on the development, reports suggest the airline has been preparing for this expansion since mid-2023. At that time, Wizz Air secured regulatory approvals from aviation authorities in Hungary, Austria, and Italy to operate flights to India, according to AIRportal and statements from CEO József Váradi.

In April 2024, an unnamed airline applied to Hungary’s Ministry of Construction and Transport for rights to operate the Budapest-Mumbai route, further indicating the route’s imminent launch. Meanwhile, Wizz Air Malta was awarded traffic rights for flights between Italy and India, while the Austria-India bilateral currently covers only New Delhi.

According to ch-aviation, Wizz Air has 47 Airbus A321XLR aircraft on order across its UK, Malta, and Abu Dhabi divisions. The first unit, msn 11631, was recently spotted undergoing tests in Hamburg.
