Zambia Airways Gears Up for Regional Expansion with Two Additional Boeing 737 Aircraft
In a significant boost to its fleet and regional competitiveness, Zambia Airways is poised to enhance its service offerings with the addition of two Boeing 737 aircraft, courtesy of its minority shareholder, Ethiopian Airlines. This announcement was made by Frank Tayali, Zambia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, during a celebration marking Ethiopian Airlines’ quarter-century of operations in Zambia.
Highlighting the importance of this development, Tayali noted, “With the integration of two more 737 Boeing aircraft into our fleet, Zambia Airways is set to emerge as a formidable player in the regional aviation market.” This move underscores Zambia Airways’ strategic intent to extend its reach and service quality across regional routes.
Currently, Zambia Airways operates a modest yet efficient fleet comprising a single 737-800 and a DHC-8-Q400, both of which are on loan from Ethiopian Airlines. Ethiopian Airlines, renowned for its extensive network and operational expertise, holds a 45% stake in Zambia Airways. The majority ownership remains with the Zambian government, under the stewardship of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which owns a 55% share.
As of now, Zambia Airways’ regional footprint includes a daily route between Lusaka and Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, serviced by the 737-800. The airline also operates domestic flights to key destinations within Zambia, including Livingstone, Ndola International, and Solwezi, utilizing the Dash 8-Q400.
The collaboration between the Zambian government and Ethiopian Airlines has been lauded by Tayali, who remarked on the strategic and beneficial nature of the partnership. He praised Ethiopian Airlines for its commitment to advancing technology, expanding the network, and contributing to the professional development of Zambian aviation personnel, including pilots and airline staff.
This expansion effort by Zambia Airways not only signifies a leap towards increased regional service capabilities but also represents a strengthening of the symbiotic relationship between Zambia and Ethiopian Airlines. As the airline prepares to welcome the new aircraft into its fleet, the anticipation for enhanced regional connectivity and competitive service offerings grows.
Industry watchers and aviation experts are keenly observing Zambia Airways’ moves, as it gears up to make a more pronounced impact on regional aviation. The forthcoming inclusion of the two 737s is seen as a pivotal moment in the airline’s journey towards becoming a key player in the African skies.
