The study concludes that European travellers are optimistic, and although cautious, perspectives are encouraging: It is expected that 2021 will be a much more positive year when it comes to travelling and getting to know destinations of choice.

eDreams ODIGEO recently published its annual study “A Year in Travel by eDreams ODIGEO”, which provides an overview of the past year and some predictions for 2021. Thus, analysing current bookings for trips to take place between January 1 and December 31 of this year, the company concludes that Lisbon is at the top of the destinations with the most bookings for 2021. This is followed by Istanbul (Turkey), Fort de France (Martinique), Palma de Majorca and Tenerife (Spain). In addition, short and medium distance destinations still predominate in preferences.

The changes brought by the pandemic.

With the arrival of the COVID-19 outbreak, habits and options were completely changed – movement restrictions were different in each country, the opening of borders did not happen at the same time and the situation was constantly changing.

For travellers from the European continent, the city with the most demand in the first months of the year was London. Lisbon and Porto were also in the Top 10 of favourite destinations, in sixth and tenth place, respectively.

Between June and September, the most popular travel destinations for the Portuguese were Paris, Ponta Delgada, and Funchal.

eDreams then concludes that European travellers are optimistic but still cautious about their plans. The outlook is, however, encouraging and it is expected that 2021 will be a much more positive year when it comes to traveling and seeing the world.
